Licorice mushroom (Fistulina hepatica)
A mushroom of the Basidiomycete order Aphyllostegales and the family Licoriceae. It is reddish purple in color and its shape and color resemble an animal's liver, hence the name. It grows on old chinquapin or oak trees, and occasionally on other broadleaf trees. The fruiting body is tongue-shaped or ovoid, with a flattened surface. The stem grows horizontally. The cap is 10-20cm in diameter. It can be eaten when young. It is known in Hokkaido, Honshu, and Kyushu, and is also distributed in North America, Europe, Australia, and India.
