Helena - Helena (English spelling)

Helena - Helena (English spelling)

A city in the Big Belt Mountains in the midwestern part of Montana, United States, and the state capital. Population 25,780 (2000). It is a transportation hub, located in a region rich in mineral resources such as gold, silver, and lead, and in the midst of cattle ranching. It is also an important commercial center, and the development of various industries such as machinery, concrete, and chemicals cannot be overlooked. In 1864, gold was discovered where Main Street is now, and the town was established, and in 1881 it was incorporated as a city. It became the capital of the territory in 1875, and continued to hold the position even after Montana was admitted to the state in 1889. There are many interesting buildings in the city, including St. Helena Cathedral, which is modeled after the Cologne Cathedral in Germany, St. John's Church, and the state capitol. The nearby Helena National Forest is a popular recreational spot for citizens. The Rocky Mountain Watershed runs to the west of the city.
