The central city of Kitakami City in southern Iwate Prefecture. Former town name. Located on the river terraces of the Kitakami River and Waga River, it is where Kurosawajiri Fortress, known as the battlefield of the Battle of Zenkunen, was built. It was also a post station on the Oshu Kaido road, but in the Edo period, it became a transfer port at the southern end of Morioka Domain due to shipping on the Kitakami River. It flourished as a river port settlement with the establishment of a domain storehouse, the storehouse magistrate, the ship magistrate, and a ship wholesaler. It is still a key transportation location, as it is the junction of the JR Tohoku Main Line and the Kitakami Line. Nearby is Tenshochi Park lined with cherry trees, where a local performing arts festival featuring Onikenmai and Shikaodori is held every year in mid-August.
