…An evergreen tall tree of the cypress family with fine, scale-like leaves pressed together and twigs with two sides (illustration). It is endemic to Japan, and its timber has a wide range of uses. The trunk grows straight, sometimes reaching a height of 50 m and a diameter of 2 m. The bark of the trunk is reddish-brown and splits vertically, peeling off in thin strips, the rest of which is strongly reddish. The branches are densely divided, forming an elliptical-conical crown. The twigs are flattened, with scaly leaves arranged in cross-pairs, with the dorsal and ventral leaves rhomboid and the lateral leaves folded in two, and the tips blunt. There are white stomatal lines at the borders of each leaf on the dorsal (underside) side of the twig, giving it a Y-shape. …
