…In the Edo period, a seal was placed at the end of a document or account book, usually by a person or institution of a higher rank than the creator, to certify that the entries in the document or account book were correct. It is also called an inner seal, and in many cases it is accompanied by a certification statement (colophon). In terms of function, it has a character similar to the old stamps and stamps found on lost letters, sales tickets, and other documents from before the Sengoku period, but it is thought that the format of inner seals was not systematically established by shogunate laws and regulations until around the Kyoho period (1716-36). …
