A mineral of the mica group. (K, Ca, Na) 1- x (Al, Fe 3+ , Fe 2+ , Mg) 2 (Si, Al) 4 O 10 (OH) 2 . It is gray-green or green in color. It is monoclinic, usually earthy or granular, matte, with a hardness of 2 and a specific gravity of 2.2 to 2.8. It weathers to yellow or brown. It occurs in shallow marine sedimentary rocks and volcaniclastic rocks. It is used as an ion exchange agent to soften hard water and as a potash fertilizer. The name of the mineral comes from the Greek glaucos (blue-green). Glauconite is a mineral that forms simultaneously with sediments and contains potassium, so it is the most popular mineral for dating strata, as absolute dating can be done by the potassium-argon method.
