Japanese: ヒマ(蓖麻) - ヒマ（英語表記）castor bean

Also known as castor bean (illustration). A woody herb of the Euphorbiaceae family native to tropical East Africa. The plant is large, with thick, hollow stems, 1-3m tall. In the tropics, it continues to grow perennially, becoming a shrub over 6m tall. In Japan, it dies in winter and is treated as an annual plant. The leaves are palmately lobed, 20-30cm in diameter, serrated, and have long petioles. In Japan, panicles 30-60cm long are produced from the stem apex from summer to autumn, with male flowers with many branched filaments at the base and female flowers at the top.

トウゴマともいう（イラスト）。熱帯東アフリカ原産のトウダイグサ科の木質草本。草姿は大型で，茎は太く中空，1～3m。熱帯では多年にわたり生長をつづけ，高さ6mをこえる低木状になる。日本では冬に枯れるので一年草として扱われる。葉は掌状に切れ込み，径20～30cm，鋸歯があり，長い葉柄がある。日本では夏から秋に茎頂から長さ30～60cmの円錐花序を出し，基部には多数に分枝した花糸を有する雄花を，また上部には雌花をつける。
