Years of birth and death unknown. A Joruri tayu (joruri narrator) from around the Enpo to Genroku periods (1673-1704). In the book "Naniwa Suzume" published in 1679 (Enpo 7), it is written that he was active at the Ito Dewa no Jōza in Osaka, and that his Fumiya-bushi (a type of Japanese folk song) was highly praised and once very popular. In the "Meijin Kishinroku" it is written that he died in 1694 (Genroku 7), but his career and other details are unclear. There is a theory that he was the founder of the Fumiya-bushi. Fumiya-bushi fell into decline in the late Genroku period due to the influence of Gidayū-bushi, and today only the tune "Fumiya" remains in Gidayū and Icchu Bungo-style Jōruri. The style of the piece is said to be a sad and soft-spoken style, and was also called "Nakibushi". Incidentally, the fourth head of the Shinnai-bushi school, Okamoto Fumiya (1895-1996), is not related to Fumiyabushi. The name Fumiyabushi remains in the local performing arts of Sado today.
