Elbasan (English spelling)
The administrative center of the Elbasan region in central Albania. It is located in the fertile river valley on the north bank of the upper Shkumbi River. It was built as a fortress city during the Turkish occupation (14th-15th centuries) and later became one of the bases of the national independence movement against Turkey. Until World War II, about 85% of the population were Muslim. Olives, corn, and tobacco are the main crops. There are many olive oil, soap, and lumber factories, and in 1957 an oil refinery was built in the western suburbs. There was an old Roman road and now the Durrës-Korçë motorway, and it is also connected to Durrës by rail. The city center is small, but old street arches, towers, and walls remain. Population 83,300 (1990 estimate).
