Born: July 24, 1775 in Arras
[Died] May 11, 1857. A captain of the Parisian police force and a memoirist. Former soldier. He escaped from the prison where he was sent for fraud, became a spy under Prince Pasquier, and then became the captain of the police force made up of freed convicts. He ran a factory for a while, went bankrupt, returned to the police force, but was imprisoned again for instigating theft. He also wrote Mémoires (4 volumes, 1828-29) and Les Voleurs (1837), both written by ghostwriters. He was the model for the character Beautran in Balzac's La Comédie Humaine.
