...The original members were Bonnard, Vuillard, Henri-Gabriel Ibels (1867-1936), René Piot (1869-1934), Paul Ranson (1864-1909), Ker Xavier Roussel (1867-1944), Georges Lacombe (1868-1916), József Rippl-Rónai (1861-1927), Maillol, Vallotton, Jan Verkade (1868-1946), and others. In 1888, at Pont-Aven in Brittany, Sérusier, under the tutelage of Gauguin, painted a novel landscape study called "Talisman." This was a major revelation for Denis and others who were searching for a way beyond Impressionism, and it was the direct trigger for the formation of the group.
