frilled lizard

frilled lizard

A lizard of the Agamidae family in the Squamata order of the Reptilia class. It is found in northern Australia and southeastern New Guinea, inhabiting lowland forests. Its total length is 75-90 cm, with the tail taking up about two-thirds of that. It has a large, scarf-like frill on its neck, supported by a cartilage support formed by an elongated hyoid bone. It usually hangs down from its shoulders, but when excited it spreads it like a parasol, reaching a diameter of 20-30 cm. The frill has the effect of making the body appear larger, and it spreads it when threatening an enemy or courting, but it is also thought that its large skin area acts as a radiator to regulate body temperature. It is arboreal, but descends to the ground after rainfall to hunt for insects, including large numbers of ants. When startled, it runs a considerable distance on its hind legs alone, escaping to the safety of a tree.
