Iiyama [city] - Iiyama
A city in northeastern Nagano Prefecture. It was incorporated as a city in 1954. The town developed from the castle town of the Uesugi clan in the Iiyama Basin in the Chikuma River basin. It is on the Hokuriku Shinkansen and Iiyama Line. The city is covered with deep snow and has rows of gangi-style houses. Ski resorts such as Togari and Madarao Kogen are located within the city limits. In addition to the electrical equipment industry, which has flourished in recent years, the city is also known for its skis, tatami mats, Buddhist altars, and shoji paper. The surrounding rural areas are rich in hops and burdock. Area: 202.43 km2 . Population: 23,545 (2010).

長野県北東部の市。1954年市制。千曲(ちくま)川流域の飯山盆地に上杉氏の城下町から発達した市街がある。北陸新幹線・飯山線が通じる。雪が深く雁木(がんぎ)の町並みがみられ,市域には戸狩,斑尾(まだらお)高原などのスキー場がある。近年盛んになった電気機器工業のほか,スキー,畳表,仏壇,障子紙を特産。付近農村はホップ,ゴボウの多産地。202.43km2。2万3545人(2010)。
