A city in northeastern Nagano Prefecture. It was incorporated as a city in 1954. The town developed from the castle town of the Uesugi clan in the Iiyama Basin in the Chikuma River basin. It is on the Hokuriku Shinkansen and Iiyama Line. The city is covered with deep snow and has rows of gangi-style houses. Ski resorts such as Togari and Madarao Kogen are located within the city limits. In addition to the electrical equipment industry, which has flourished in recent years, the city is also known for its skis, tatami mats, Buddhist altars, and shoji paper.
