Yakushisou - Yakushisou

Japanese: ヤクシソウ - やくしそう
Yakushisou - Yakushisou

It is a biennial plant of the Asteraceae family. It is completely hairless and exudes a milky juice when cut. The stem is 0.3-1 meter tall, rather thin and tough. The leaves are spoon-shaped and clasp the stem, are soft, and powdery white on the underside. From August to November, it produces many yellow flower heads, each about 1.5 centimeters in diameter. The flower heads consist of only ray flowers, and turn downward after flowering. The fruits have white bristly pappus, and are dispersed by the wind. It is commonly found growing on low, sunny mountains, and is distributed throughout Japan, the Korean peninsula, China, and Indochina. Its name comes from the fact that the leaf shape resembles the halo of the Medicine Buddha. The young leaves are boiled and soaked in water for consumption.
