Collar - Erimaki

Japanese:
Collar - Erimaki

It is a clothing accessory worn by men and women around the collar or shoulders, primarily to keep warm. In the Edo period, it was called a neck wrap, and was wrapped around the neck by old people and monks during the bitter cold. Even in cities, thin silk neck wraps were worn in this way when wearing Western clothing until the early Showa period. In the Edo period, neck wraps were made of white or plain-colored silk, but with the influx of Western culture in the Meiji period, when the Western fashion of the Rokumeikan school began to take high society by storm, knitted wool and fur products began to be used. However, it was during the Taisho and Showa periods that high-quality furs such as mink and squirrel began to appear as neck wraps. Nowadays, there are many types of neck wraps, from high-quality furs to common knitted wool ones, and these also change with fashion.
