Ishiyama Honganji Rebellion

Japanese: 石山本願寺一揆 - いしやまほんがんじいっき

The Ikko Ikki uprising fought against Oda Nobunaga from 1570 (Genki 1) to 1580 (Tensho 8). It is also known as the Ishiyama War, but there was not constant fighting in Ishiyama, Settsu Province, where Hongan-ji Temple was located, for 11 years. Nobunaga entered Kyoto in 1568 (Eiroku 11) and demanded the surrender of Ishiyama in 1570, but Hongan-ji Temple refused, and tensions intensified. In August of that year, Nobunaga attacked the Miyoshi Triumvirate at Nakanoshima, Settsu, but rumors of an attack on Hongan-ji Temple circulated thereafter, and the head priest, Kennyo, ordered his followers in various provinces to rise up in revolt, and they attacked Nobunaga on September 12th.

1570年(元亀1)から80年(天正8)まで織田信長と戦った一向一揆。石山合戦ともいうが，本願寺の所在地摂津国石山で11年間絶えまなく戦闘があったわけではない。　1568年(永禄11)入洛した信長は70年石山明渡しを要求し，本願寺はこれを拒絶して緊張は激化していた。同年8月信長は摂津中之島に三好三人衆を攻めたが，その後本願寺を攻撃するとの風聞がしきりとなり，法主顕如は諸国門徒に蜂起を指令し，9月12日に信長を攻めた。
