Vincenzo Scamozzi

Vincenzo Scamozzi

Italian architect and theorist. Born in Vicenza. After studying in the city under his father, who was the editor of Sebastiano Serlio's Treatise on Architecture, he moved to Venice in 1572. His style was shaped by his study of the works of Serlio, Sansovino, and Palladio. He particularly admired Palladio, and not only was his influence evident in all of his major works, but after his death he completed Palladio's masterpieces, the Teatro Olimpico and Villa Rotonda. From 1578 to 1681 he went to Rome to study ancient ruins, and from 1599 to 1600 he traveled around Europe, leaving behind fascinating accounts of Gothic architecture. In 1504 he was invited by the Archbishop of Salzburg to design the cathedral and archbishop's palace in the city. His most famous work is Palazzo Trissino in Vicenza. His major work, De Architectura General (1615), was translated into many European languages, and exerted a great influence on him rather than through his works.
