1709‐62 Russian Empress. Reigned 1741-62. Daughter of Peter I. She ascended to the throne in 1741 after the Court Revolution. Her good nature made her popular. She enjoyed dancing and theater, and never married, but had many lovers, including the handsome Cossack singer Razumovsky. Under her rule, Russian salon culture and the Europeanization of upper class society progressed, and the Academy of Arts and Moscow University were founded. From the early 1750s, Pyotr Ivanovich Shuvalov (1710-62) was the de facto leader of domestic affairs, and he implemented policies of economic liberalism and the rule of law, such as abolishing domestic customs duties and compiling a legal code, but the legal status of serfs declined.
