Kyrgyzstan - Kyrgyzstan (English spelling)

Another name for the Kyrgyz Republic, located in the northern part of Central Asia, and also the old name of this region. In Russian it is also called Kirgizia. The Kyrgyz Republic was one of the 15 republics that made up the former Soviet Union, the Kirgizskaya SSR (Kirgyzstan Soviet Socialist Republic). On January 5, 1991, prior to the collapse of the Soviet Union (December 1991), the country temporarily changed its name to the Republic of Kyrgyzstan, and in August of the same year it declared independence from the Soviet Union, but in May 1993 it reverted to the name Kyrgyz Republic.

中央アジアの北部に位置するキルギス共和国の別称で、この地域の旧来の名称でもある。ロシア語でキルギジアКиргизия／Kirgiziyaともいう。キルギス共和国は旧ソビエト連邦を構成する15共和国の一つ、キルギス・ソビエト社会主義共和国Киргизская ССР／Kirgizskaya SSRであった。ソ連崩壊（1991年12月）に先だつ91年1月5日、国名を一時キルギスタン共和国と改め、同年8月ソ連からの独立を宣言したが、93年5月にはキルギス共和国の名に戻している。
