A perennial plant of the Asteraceae family. The stems are thin, erect, 0.5-1 meter tall, and slightly branched upwards. The leaves are comb-like, with either deep or middle lobes, and sharp serrations on the edges. The name comes from the saw-like shape of the leaves. There are no petioles, and the leaves have rather large lobes at the base that embrace the stem. From July to September, the plant produces somewhat dense corymbs at the top of the stem. The flower heads consist of 5-7 white ray florets and tubular flowers. The achene is flat, 3 mm long, and has no hairs or pappus. It grows in mountain grasslands, and is distributed from Honshu, Hokkaido, and northern East Asia to the temperate zone of North America. It has been cultivated for ornamental purposes since ancient times. It is also used medicinally, as a stomach tonic and to treat hemorrhoids. The genus name Achillea comes from the legend that the Greek hero Achilles discovered the medicinal properties of this species.

A closely related species, Achillea millefolium L., is a horticultural plant native to Europe with leaves that are deeply pinnate and bifurcate. In recent years, it has come to be known by its genus name, Achillea, and is widely cultivated.
