Born June 14, 1969, in Bruhl, Germany. Real name Stephanie Maria Graf. Dominated the women's tennis world in the 1980s and 1990s. She started playing tennis with her father, who would later become her coach, and at age 13, became the second youngest player in history to enter the world rankings. In 1987, she defeated Martina Navratilova, the top player at the time, at the French Open, to win her first Grand Slam title. In 1988, she won the Australian Open, French Open, Wimbledon, and US Open, achieving the Grand Slam (winning all four Grand Slam tournaments). In the same year, she won the gold medal in the women's singles at the Seoul Olympic Games in the Republic of Korea (South Korea). With her concentration, speed, and powerful forehand strokes, she held the world number one ranking from 1987 to 1991. She won the Wimbledon women's singles title seven times, second only to Navratilova's nine titles, and won the French Open six times, the US Open five times, and the Australian Open four times. She retired in 1999. She was inducted into the International Tennis Hall of Fame in 2004. graph |
