A type of costume doll. A doll that can be played with by changing various costumes. Naked dolls and checkered dolls, in which clothes are sewn at home, have been around since the early Edo period. Among Yamato dolls from the Meiji period onwards, there are dolls around 10cm in size that are designed primarily for dressing up, and are called kusekae ningyo. There are also paper dolls. After World War II, following American-made soft vinyl dolls, domestically produced dolls of the same type also appeared, gaining popularity among young girls, and a wide range of fashionable costumes are available for dressing up.
