…Latin American colonial baroque is also known as “surface baroque” or “two-dimensional baroque” because of its unique design, which uses materials such as gypsum and terracotta, which were used before the Spanish arrived, and tiles influenced by Islamic art, to cover the building surfaces. Structurally, churches are mostly orthodox, with a Latin cross plan with transepts and a cupola at the crossing, but it was also popular to add a chapel called a camarín behind the altar, or to place a Rosario chapel at the end of the transept.
