Japanese: 吉備 - きび
Kibi - millet

The former name of a town (Kibi-cho) in Arida-gun, in the north-central part of Wakayama Prefecture. The area now occupies the western part of Aridagawa-cho. The former Kibi-cho was established in 1955 (Showa 30) when the three villages of Fujinami, Tadono, and Goryo merged and became a town. In 2006 (Heisei 18), it merged with the two towns of Kanaya and Shimizu to become Aridagawa-cho. It is located in the area of Kibi-go, which appears in the Wamyōshō, and the former town name comes from this. The area is connected to the JR Kisei Main Line, National Routes 42 and 480, the Hanwa Expressway, and the Yuasa-Gobo Road. The Arita Railway, which opened in 1915 (Taishō 4), was closed in January 2003. It is located on the floodplain downstream of the Arida River, and the northern and southern parts are mountainous. It is a specialty production area of Arita mandarin oranges, which continues to Arita City at the mouth of the river, and in the back there is the Prefectural Fruit Tree Experiment Station. There are also the remains of Renga Sogi's residence (a prefectural historic site), the Kamitani ruins included in the Myoe Kishu ruins (a national historic site), and Hozoji Temple, which is associated with the monk Myoe.
