Other sources of revenue included the vast private property of the imperial family (patrimonium Caesaris), and under Septimius Severus the imperial estates (res privata) were established, centering on confiscated property and the property of the Antonine dynasty, making the financial system even more complex. The 3rd century saw a marked decline in the value of the currency and a rise in prices.
