Born: March 9, 1907, Bucharest [Died] April 22, 1986, Chicago Romanian scholar of religion, mythology, and novelist. After graduating from the University of Bucharest, he studied abroad in Italy and India, where he studied philosophy and religious studies. After returning to Japan, he was appointed assistant professor at the Department of Philosophy at the University of Bucharest, and was also active as a critic and published fantasy novels. During World War II, he left the country as a diplomat and spent his time as a researcher in Paris and other places. In 1956, he became a professor at the University of Chicago, and left a great impact in the field of religious studies. His works include over a dozen academic books, a large number of academic papers, and several short and medium-length stories. His main works include Le Mythe de l'éternel retour (1949), Images et symboles: essai sur le symbolisme magico-religieux (52), Shamanism (64), and Le Sacré et le profane (65).
