[Died] April 22, 1986, Chicago Romanian scholar of religion, mythology, and novelist. After graduating from the University of Bucharest, he studied abroad in Italy and India, where he studied philosophy and religious studies. After returning to Japan, he was appointed assistant professor at the Department of Philosophy at the University of Bucharest, and was also active as a critic and published fantasy novels. During World War II, he left the country as a diplomat and spent his time as a researcher in Paris and other places. In 1956, he became a professor at the University of Chicago, and left a great impact in the field of religious studies. His works include over a dozen academic books, a large number of academic papers, and several short and medium-length stories. His main works include Le Mythe de l'éternel retour (1949), Images et symboles: essai sur le symbolisme magico-religieux (52), Shamanism (64), and Le Sacré et le profane (65). Her novels include Domnisoara Cristina (36) and On Muntuleasa Street (67).

ルーマニアの宗教学者，神話学者，小説家。ブカレスト大学卒業後，イタリア，インドに留学。哲学，宗教学を学ぶ。帰国後，ブカレスト大学哲学科の助教授に任命され，同時に評論家としても活躍し，幻想的小説も発表する。第2次世界大戦中に外交官として国を出たまま，パリその他各地で研究生活をおくった。 1956年シカゴ大学教授となり，宗教研究の分野で大きな影響を残した。数十冊をこえる学術書，膨大な学術論文，数十編の中・短編小説がある。主著『永遠回帰の神話』 Le Mythe de l'éternel retour (1949) ，『イメージとシンボル』 Images et symboles: essai sur le symbolisme magico-religieux (52) ，『シーャマニズム』 Shamanism (64) ，『聖と俗』 Le Sacré et le profane (65) 。小説『令嬢クリスティナ』 Domnisoara Cristina (36) ，『ムントゥリャサ通りで』 De strada Mântuleasa (67) など。
