A religious reform movement in modern India. It was founded in Bombay in 1867 under the influence of Keshav Chandra Sen, a central figure in the Brahma Samaj, which had been established earlier in Bengal. It advocated the abolition of idol worship, child marriage, caste discrimination in marriage and food, etc., and also carried out various social and religious reform movements, such as allowing widow remarriage and encouraging education for women.
