A moss of the family Scleractinaceae that is most commonly found around human habitation. It is found all over the world, even in Antarctica, but it is highly resistant to dry air and pollution and grows in large cities. In Japan, it grows on stone walls, concrete, soil, and even roofs of houses, but it is also common in mountainous areas, and is found on the summit of Mount Fuji. The plants are small, silvery or whitish-green, and form a dense, velvety mat. The stems are thin, 3-10 mm tall, densely overlapping, and broadly oval. The cells at the tip lack chloroplasts and are transparent, which makes the plant appear white. Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
