A city in central-west Hokkaido. Incorporated as a city in 1957. The Do-o Expressway runs through the city. It developed as a coal mining town in the central Ishikari coalfield, but by 1989, many mines had closed one after another. An industrial complex was then developed, attracting carbon black factories and other businesses. Katsurazawa Dam is located upstream of the Ikushunbetsu River, and horticulture is practiced downstream. Area: 302.52 km2 . Population: 10,221 (2010). 北海道中西部の市。1957年市制。道央自動車道が通じる。石狩炭田中部の炭鉱都市として発展したが,1989年までに相次ぎ閉山した。その後工業団地が造成され,カーボンブラック工場などが誘致された。幾春別川上流には桂沢ダムがあり,下流部では園芸農業が行われる。302.52km2。1万221人(2010)。
