Kotlyarevskii, I.

...Ukraine became part of Russia in the 17th century, and Belarus in the 18th century. The late 18th century poet-philosopher Grigori Skovoroda (1722-94) and Ivan Kotlyarevskii (1769-1838), known for his comedy Aeneid (1798), based on Virgil's Aeneid, are credited with creating modern Ukrainian literary language by rejecting the influence of Polish, Church Slavonic, and other languages and incorporating elements of the folk language. The Ukrainian Romanticism movement created a sense of national identity, reaching its apex in the national poet Shevchenko.
