The late 18th century poet-philosopher Grigori Skovoroda (1722-94) and Ivan Kotlyarevskii (1769-1838), known for his comedy Aeneid (1798), based on Virgil's Aeneid, are credited with creating modern Ukrainian literary language by rejecting the influence of Polish, Church Slavonic, and other languages and incorporating elements of the folk language.
