A navigation system developed to alleviate the increasing air traffic, especially congestion around navigational radio facilities and terminals, and to make effective use of airspace. It is abbreviated as RNAV. Rather than being limited to the traditional air routes set between navigational radio facilities, specific or arbitrary points called waypoints are set on a map, and in principle, aircraft fly along routes connecting the waypoints. Waypoints are determined by latitude and longitude coordinates or the angle from a VOR station and the distance from a distance measuring device (DME), and an on-board computer calculates the flight route between the specified waypoints based on this information. When an inertial navigation system is used, in addition to the flight route between waypoints, it is also possible to add a function to set a route parallel to it.
