In 1842, he published a paper entitled "On the Coloured Light of Double Stars and Some Other Celestial Bodies", in which he demonstrated that the frequency of waves observed is related to the motion of the wave source and the observer relative to the medium through which the waves propagate, i.e., the existence of the Doppler effect. In 1846, he extended this to the case where both the wave source and the observer move simultaneously. The Doppler effect for sound was first demonstrated in 1845 by the Dutchman Buys-Ballot (1817-90) in Utrecht, using a locomotive with a trumpeter on board. However, serious verification of the Doppler effect for light had to wait until the development of a suitable spectroscope. [From Boyce Ballot's Law]...This law was proposed in 1857 by the Dutch meteorologist and physical chemist Christoph Hendrik Diederik Buys-Ballot (1817-90). It states that when standing with one's back to the direction from which the wind is blowing, the center of a low pressure system (storm) is located in front of one's left hand. This is an empirical law obtained at sea, but it can also be understood theoretically from the balance of the pressure gradient force, the Coriolis force, and the frictional force between the atmosphere and the sea surface (ground). *Some of the terminology that refers to "Buys-Ballot, CHD" is listed below. … ※「Buys-Ballot,C.H.D.」
