A cause that serves as the basis for a legal or factual act to be considered legally justified. For example, when a person plants a tree on a piece of land, the person who plants the tree is the owner of the land or has the right to use the land (a person who has a surface right or a lease based on a contract, etc.) is a legitimate title. If the person plants a tree on someone else's land without a title, he or she cannot assert his or her own rights (Civil Code, Article 242), and in some cases may be considered an illegal occupant of the land. However, unlike other cases, possession (right) is a title regardless of the cause of possession, and as a result, thieves and squatters are also given the protection of possession (right).
