A city in the Seine-et-Marne department in northern France, located about 44 km northeast of Paris. It faces the Marne River and the Lourques Canal, which leads to Paris, and has a port for barges. A town dating back to Gallo-Roman times, it was part of the County of Champagne from 923 to 1361. During World War I, it was here that German troops were stopped. It is home to chemical and metal industries, and is also a place for the distribution of agricultural products. It has the 13th-14th century St. Etienne Cathedral and the old bishop's gardens (12th-17th century) designed by Le Nôtre. Population 49,409 (1990). Moo |
