Photosensitive glass - Kankouseigarasu (English spelling)

It is a glass that is sensitive to light from the near ultraviolet to the short wavelength region of visible light, and was developed by Corning in the United States around 1950. In this glass, gold, silver, or copper ions as photosensitizers and cerium ions or halogen ions as reducing agents are uniformly dispersed. In the exposed areas, the metal ions are reduced, but there is no change in appearance. When the glass is heated appropriately between its transition point and softening point for development, the reduced metal atoms aggregate to form colloids that remain extremely stable even after cooling, and produce colors such as gold red, silver yellow, and copper red. Therefore, a semi-permanent positive image can be obtained by printing a photographic negative. Also, a multi-colored image can be formed by controlling the shape of the colloids and precipitating them. On the other hand, if a lithium silicate-based glass composition is used for the parent glass, microcrystals are precipitated only in the areas where the metal colloids are precipitated, resulting in a white image. When glass in which lithium metasilicate has precipitated as microcrystals is treated with 2-10% hydrofluoric acid, only the white image parts dissolve, so that detailed patterns can be cut into plate glass if desired. On the other hand, some chalcogenide glasses containing compounds such as sulfur, selenium, and tellurium are photosensitive. Many of them are in the form of thin films, and some have a refractive index that can be changed by irradiation with a laser beam, and some can be restored by irradiation under different conditions. The parts with a changed refractive index can be read as an image, and since they have a resolution of 3,000 lines per millimeter, they can also be used for holography. In addition, when a thin film of chalcogenide glass is created on a film of metallic silver, the silver reacts with the glass in the exposed areas, changing its physical properties and making it photosensitive. This can be used in printing. Photochromic glass, which contains silver halide colloids, is also considered a type of photosensitive glass. Furthermore, since the latter half of the 1990s, it has become possible to focus a high-energy beam such as a femtosecond laser on glass, changing the refractive index and redox state of the glass near the focus, and inducing phase separation and crystallization. Therefore, it can be said that all glasses are photosensitive to high-energy beams.

近紫外部から可視光線の短波長域に感光性をもつガラスで、1950年ころアメリカのコーニング社で開発された。このガラス中には感光剤として金、銀、または銅などのイオンと、還元剤としてセリウムイオンやハロゲンイオンなどが均一に分散されている。感光した部分では金属イオンが還元されるが、外観上の変化はない。現像のために、そのガラスの転移点と軟化点の間で適当に加熱すると、還元された金属原子が凝集してコロイドをつくり、冷却後もきわめて安定に存在し、金赤、銀黄、銅赤などの発色が得られる。したがって写真陰画を焼き付ければ半永久的な陽画を得ることができる。また、それらのコロイドの形状を制御して析出させることにより多色の画像を形成することができる。一方、母体ガラスにケイ酸リチウム系のガラス組成を使うと、金属コロイドの析出している部分だけに微結晶が析出して白い画像が得られる。微結晶としてメタケイ酸リチウムが析出したガラスは2～10％のフッ化水素酸で処理すると、白い画像部分だけが溶出するので、希望により板ガラスに精細な模様を切り抜くことができる。他方、硫黄(いおう)、セレン、テルルなどの化合物を含むカルコゲン化物ガラスの一部に感光性を示すものがある。多くは薄膜状でレーザー光線の照射によって屈折率を変え、異なる条件の照射で復原するものもある。屈折率を変えた部分は画像として読み取ることができ、1ミリメートル当り3000本の解像力もあるのでホログラフィーなどに供することも可能である。このほか、金属銀の膜上にカルコゲン化物ガラスの薄膜をつくったものは、露光部で銀がガラスと反応して物性が変わり、感光性を示す。これは印刷への応用が考えられる。なお、ハロゲン化銀のコロイドを含むフォトクロミックスガラスも感光性ガラスの一種と考えられる。さらに、1990年代後半ごろから、フェムト秒レーザーなどの高エネルギービームをガラス中に集光照射させ、その焦点付近のガラスの、屈折率や酸化還元状態を変えたり、分相や結晶を起こさせたりすることが可能である。したがって、高エネルギービームのガラスに対しては、あらゆるガラスが感光性であるといえる。
