Kebatinan (English spelling)

Japanese: クバティナン（英語表記）kebatinan

An abstract noun formed by adding the prefix ke- and the suffix -an to the Javanese word batin, meaning "inside" or "inner self." It means "innerness," and also Javanese mysticism, that is, a system of thought, knowledge, art, and practice that strengthens the inner self. In the narrow sense, it is a circle or sect consisting of a master and his disciples, and the main ones include Sapta Dharma, Subud, and Semara. In Kebatinan, there is generally no church organization that certifies and authorizes masters, and anyone can become a master if their knowledge and art are recognized by those around them and they are looked up to as a master.

〈内〉〈内なる自己〉を意味するジャワ語batinに接頭辞ke‐と接尾辞‐anを付してできた抽象名詞。〈内なること〉，さらには，ジャワ教，ジャワ神秘主義，すなわち自己の内面を強める思想･知と術･行の体系を意味する。狭義にはそれは師とそのもとに集まる弟子からなるサークルまたはセクトであり，主要なものとしては，サプタ･ダルマ，スブッド，スマラなどを挙げることができる。クバティナンにおいては一般に師たることを認定し権威づける教会組織は存在せず，周囲よりその知と術を認められ師と仰がれれば誰でも師となることができる。
