A port city in south-central Turkey, capital of Icer Province. It is located 60 km west-southwest of Adana, on the western edge of the Cilician Plain. In 1950, the port facilities were extensively remodeled and it is the shipping port for agricultural and mineral products from the Adana Plain and southeastern Anatolia. It was chosen as a port because it is free of silt and has good rail and road access to the interior. It is connected to Adana by a rail spur and is adjacent to the Istanbul-Baghdad main line. It is also home to the country's largest oil refinery, which processes most of the oil imported from the Middle East and a portion of the oil from the Rahman Mountain oil field, which is sent along the coast from the Iskenderun oil pipeline. Population: 422,357 (1990). Source: Encyclopaedia Britannica Concise Encyclopedia About Encyclopaedia Britannica Concise Encyclopedia Information |
