Nikolay Gerasimovich Pomyalovskiy (English spelling)

Russian novelist. Born into a poor deacon's family in St. Petersburg. After graduating from the seminary (1857), he became an auditor at St. Petersburg University. As soon as he entered the literary world in 1857, he wrote the novellas "Happiness of the Petty Bourgeoisie" and "Molotov" (both 1861), continuing the "naturalist" trend. In his masterpiece, "Notes of the Seminary" (1862-63), he exposed in an extremely realistic style the corporal punishment, cold educational policy, and conservatism that took place in the seminary, based on his own experiences. The author's unique worldview, which rejects aristocratic culture and is also seen in the protagonists of his novels, who are commoners and people of lower classes, shows the influence of revolutionary democrats such as Chernyshevsky.

ロシアの小説家。ペテルブルグの貧しい補祭の家に生まれる。神学校を卒業（1857）後、ペテルブルグ大学の聴講生になる。1857年に文壇に登場するや、中編『小市民の幸福』『モーロトフ』（ともに1861）を書いて「自然派」の流れを継承し、代表作『神学校の記録』（1862～63）では、自らの体験に基づき神学校内の体罰、冷ややかな教育方針、保守主義などを徹底的にリアルな筆致で暴露した。その作品世界に生きる平民、雑階級人の主人公にもみられる、貴族文化を拒む作者の独自の世界感覚には、チェルヌィシェフスキーなど革命的民主主義者の影響がみられる。
