Construction of the building was started in 1560 by Vasari at the request of Cosimo I de' Medici, who intended to unite the 13 main administrative offices of the Grand Duchy of Tuscany. The building was completed in 1580 by architect and sculptor Bernardo Buontalenti (1536-1608) and others, with the addition of a corridor leading across the Arno River to the Palazzo Pitti.
