Río de la Plata (English spelling)

A river that flows between Uruguay and Argentina on the Atlantic coast of eastern South America. Discovered in 1516 by the Spaniard Juan Dias de Solis, it is the mouth of a large basin made up of the three major rivers, the Paraguay, the Paraná, and the Uruguay, and countless smaller rivers. The part where the Paraná and Uruguay join together, called the La Plata, covers an area of about 300 km, but its total drainage area is about 4.35 million km2, making it the fourth largest in the world, and its flow rate is second only to the Amazon River.

南アメリカ大陸東部，大西洋岸のウルグアイとアルゼンチンの間を流れる川。1516年スペイン人フアン･ディアス･デ･ソリスJuan Dias de Solisによって〈発見〉されたこの川は，パラグアイ川，パラナ川，ウルグアイ川の三大河川と無数の小河川から成る大流域の河口部に相当する。パラナ川とウルグアイ川が合流しラ･プラタ川と呼ばれる部分は，ほぼ300kmであるが，全流域面積は約435万km2で世界4位であり，流量はアマゾン川に次いで世界2位である。
