Born: September 1, 1790, Geneva
Died March 14, 1850. Geneva. Swiss biologist. Studied medicine in Paris and obtained his doctorate from the University of Edinburgh in 1818. He began his research in Geneva (1820). He is famous for his research on fertilization. Together with J. Dumas, he observed the testes of various animals and clarified that the testes of mature males contain sperm, while those of immature males do not. In 1824, he also demonstrated that when semen is filtered, the more sperm there are in the residue, the lower the fertilizing ability of the filtrate. These proved that the sperm in semen are the factor that initiates the development of an egg.
