Born: April 1, 1697. Hedan Died November 25, 1763. Chantilly. French novelist. Commonly known as the Abbé Prévost. He studied at a Jesuit school and became a priest, but served in the military for a time. After publishing the first volume of his semi-autobiographical novel Memoirs and Adventures of a Reclusive Nobleman (7 volumes, 1728-31), he escaped from the convent and wandered through England and the Netherlands, returning to France in 1734. The final volume of the novel, Histoire du chevalier des Grieux et de Manon Lescaut (31), is a representative 18th century love story. In addition to the novel Cleveland (31-39), he also published a literary newspaper Pour et contre (33-40) aimed at introducing Britain to the world, and translated works by S. Richardson. Prevost |
