Cape Daiozaki

Japanese:
Cape Daiozaki

A cape on the southeastern tip of the Shima Peninsula in central-eastern Mie Prefecture. It juts out on the border between the Kumano Nada Sea and the Enshu Nada Sea, and is known as a difficult place to navigate, with the entire cape being called Nakiri (wave-cutting). The tip of a marine plateau based on alternating layers of sandstone and mudstone has been eroded by waves to form a cliff of about 30 meters, with reefs scattered below. On top of the cliff stands the chalk-white Daiosaki Lighthouse, built in 1927 (Showa 2), and the raging waves crashing below it are known as a masculine sight in the feminine Shima Peninsula. Souvenir shops line the entrance to the lighthouse. There is a bus service from Ugata Station on the Kintetsu Shima Line.

The offshore area, which is the dividing line between the Enshu Nada Sea and the Kumano Nada Sea, has been known as a dangerous place to cross since ancient times, and the white Daiozaki Lighthouse, which was erected on the cliff in 1927 (Showa 2), stands here.
