This profession emerged towards the end of the Muromachi period and flourished in the Momoyama period, especially during the Keicho era (1596-1615). Demand for artistic paintings increased sharply with the rise of the power of the townspeople of Sakai, Osaka, and Kyoto, and these artists produced and sold such paintings. The wide range of works included gold and silver paint on colored paper and strips of paper, fan paintings, shell paintings, drawings and sketches for dyed textiles, paintings on folding screens, architectural decoration, and coloring of marionettes, and the origins and styles of the artists involved were diverse. Sotatsu is believed to have run an art shop under the name Tawara-ya, and it is significant that he was able to tap into the artistic enthusiasm of the townspeople and give it form through this profession.
