A commercial and industrial city in the west of Senegal, West Africa. It is located at a railway junction 60 km east of the capital Dakar, and is the central city of the Thiès region, a groundnut-producing region, and the second largest city in Senegal. Population 273,599 (2001). It developed as a key transportation hub and a distribution center for groundnuts and grains. Industries include peanut oil, textiles, shoemaking, machinery, and processing of phosphate ore, which is mined nearby.
