Thiès - Thiès (English spelling)

A commercial and industrial city in the west of Senegal, West Africa. It is located at a railway junction 60 km east of the capital Dakar, and is the central city of the Thiès region, a groundnut-producing region, and the second largest city in Senegal. Population 273,599 (2001). It developed as a key transportation hub and a distribution center for groundnuts and grains. Industries include peanut oil, textiles, shoemaking, machinery, and processing of phosphate ore, which is mined nearby.

西アフリカ、セネガル西部にある商工業都市。首都ダカールの東方60キロメートルの鉄道分岐点にあり、ラッカセイ産地のティエス地方の中心都市で、セネガル第二の都市である。人口27万3599（2001）。交通の要所、ラッカセイ、穀物の集散地として発展した。落花生油、繊維、製靴、機械のほか、近郊で産出する燐(りん)鉱石加工などの工業がある。
