Located in northern Egypt, about 60 km northwest of Cairo, this is a large Neolithic settlement site representative of Lower Egypt. The main site is Marimda Bani Salama. It was excavated by Austrian H. Junker and others over a period of about 10 years from the end of the 1920s. The culture discovered here is collectively called the Merimde culture. The site is broadly divided into three periods, but since the excavation was not always accurate, there is much disagreement as to which period this culture belongs to. Based on the excavated remains, it is believed to date from the latter half of the Badari culture in Upper Egypt to the end of the Amra culture (Naqada I period).
