Understanding the characteristics of a region as a cohesive part of the earth's surface has long been an important theme in geography. In particular, traditional regional geography has focused on providing comprehensive descriptions of natural phenomena such as climate, topography, soil, and vegetation, as well as cultural phenomena such as ethnic groups, population, transportation, and land use, for a specific region. In recent years, interdisciplinary regional science and regional planning have progressed rapidly in response to societal demands, and various analytical methods have been developed, making it possible to objectively recognize regions beyond mere description.

地表のあるまとまった部分としての地域の特質を理解することは，古くから地理学の重要なテーマであった。とくに伝統的な地誌学においては，特定の地域を対象に，気候，地形，土壌，植生などの自然事象，民族，人口，交通，土地利用などの文化事象について，網羅的な記載を行うことに主眼が置かれてきた。さらに近年では，社会的要請にこたえて学際的な地域科学，地域計画学が急速に進展し，さまざまな分析手法が開発され，単なる記載にとどまらない客観的な地域の認識が可能となってきた。
