1582‐1645 Hungarian nobleman and count. Born into a middle-class Protestant aristocracy, he converted to Catholicism. He contributed to the Counter-Reformation, swore loyalty to the Habsburg family, and even used his marriage ties to acquire vast assets and the title of count, building the foundations of Hungary's most prestigious noble family. He became viceroy in 1625. While seeking autonomy for the Hungarian nobility and compromise with Habsburg absolutism, he also fought against the anti-Habsburg faction within the country, as well as the Principality of Transylvania and Protestants who supported them.
