...The old city is home to hundreds of mosques, including the oldest in Cairo, the Mosque of Amr in Fustat (built in 642), as well as mosques of Ibn Tulun, Sultan Hasan, Al-Azhar, and Muhammad Ali. It also has many tourist souks, souvenir shops, and wholesale districts selling textiles, spices, shoes, etc., and its inhabitants are middle to lower classes. The new city is made up of neatly arranged blocks radiating out from a square near the Nile (formerly Ismail Square), which was renamed Tahrir (Liberation) Square after the 1952 Egyptian Revolution. Government agencies are concentrated around the Luq Gate to the southeast of the square, and the northeast is the entertainment district and business center. The light industries of spinning, food and other industries, which developed after World War I, are relatively concentrated in the northern part of the city, but the heavy chemical industries, such as the steelworks at Helwan, railroad cars, automobiles, shipbuilding, chemical fertilizers, and petrochemicals, which were built after World War II and especially after the Egyptian Revolution, are mostly located on the outskirts of the city (Figure).

…旧市街には，フスタートにあるカイロ最古のアムルのモスク(642建設)をはじめ，イブン･トゥールーン，スルタン･ハサン，アズハル，ムハンマド･アリーなど数百のモスクが集中しており，観光客向けのスーク(市)やみやげ物製造所と，織物，香料，靴などの問屋街が多く，住民は中下層である。新市街は，1952年のエジプト革命後タハリール(解放)広場と改名されたナイル川に近い広場(もとイスマーイール広場)から，放射状に整然とした街区が展開しており，広場より南東のルーク門のあたりに政府機関が集中し，北東部が繁華街とビジネス･センターになっている。第1次世界大戦後発達した紡績･食品その他の軽工業は市の北部に比較的多いが，第2次世界大戦後，とくにエジプト革命後に建設された，ヘルワーンの製鉄所をはじめとする鉄道車両，自動車，造船，化学肥料，石油化学などの重化学工業は，おおむね市の周縁部に立地している(図)。…
