A village in Maniwa County in northern Okayama Prefecture. Population 1,809 (1995). Located in the upper reaches of the Shinjo River, a tributary of the Asahi River, most of the village area is mountainous land in the backbone of the Chugoku Mountains. The central settlement, Mikawa, is located along the Shinjo River and developed as a post town on the Izumo Kaido (currently National Route 181), which connects San'in and San'yo. Settlements are scattered along the road that runs through the Shinjo River valley. In Kuroda and Kanayama in the north, tatara ironworks were once thriving. Currently, the mountainous areas devastated by iron mining are used for grassland and pasture, and dairy farming and beef cattle raising are carried out.
