Around 1485 - 1540 or 41 Flemish painter, born Joos van der Beke. The lack of signed works or commission documents makes it difficult to determine his chronological and stylistic development, but today a series of religious paintings and portraits are attributed to Cleves, known as the "Painter of the Death of the Virgin," including the altarpiece "Death of the Virgin" (Munich, Cologne). He probably traveled to Italy, and stayed at the court of Francis I of France sometime after 1529. Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
